16 Plays by Ludwig Thoma
Ludwig
Thoma
(21
January 1867 in Oberammergau – 26 August 1921 in Tegernsee)
A German author, publisher and editor, who
gained popularity through his partially exaggerated description of everyday
Bavarian life.

Magdalena, Ein Volksstück in drei Aufzügen
|
Magdalena,
popular tragedy in three acts, one of his three
best plays. This is the story of a girl's gradual shifting from a love-life
that is frank and unselfish, and which meets with no disapproval from the
villagers, to one that is governed by considerations of money, thus causing
her ostracism and death.

Der
erste August
|
The
First of August, published by Albert Langen in
Munich. In this play, Thoma recreates the world of a small Bavarian village
and its experience of the mobilization for war. Far away from the centers of
political and economic power, the concern of the villagers contrasts with the
enthusiasm of many in the cities.
